A note from the Managing Director

During the Christmas, New Year break, my wife Colleen and I took the opportunity to visit the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra to view the “Masterpieces from Paris” exhibition.  While that was a fantastic experience, a visit to the nearby National Portrait Gallery and the National Library were equally moving experiences.  Similarly, a visit to the fascinating National Museum was a great experience.  All these provided snapshots of the history of our great country and the role of our industry in forging that history.

The National Library has regular exhibitions.  One of the current exhibitions is a series of photographs titled “Thiess 75 years: Shaping a Nation”.  The photographic collection included historical photos of major projects in which Thiess has been involved including iconic projects as the Snowy Mountain Scheme and the Sydney Harbour tunnel.  It also included photographs that chronicled the transition of Thiess from earth moving contractor to miner.

The National Portrait Gallery includes portraits of many people who have shaped our industry and our country. Two people who in their own way impacted on the Nation, the industry and the mining companies in which they were involved were Essington Lewis and Pat Mackie.  Albeit from different perspectives. Essington Lewis was instrumental in the development of BHP and led the co-ordination of industry support for the effort during WWII.

Pat Mackie was the infamous leader of the 1964/65 dispute and crippling strike at Mt Isa.  A dispute that was a seminal event in Mount Isa Mines Ltd, the industry and the Nations approach to employee relations.

The Thiess exhibition, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum all highlighted how our history as a nation has been intertwined and built upon the minerals industry.

Hence, it is with a deep sense of privilege and honour that we as a Company move forward to the third major phase of mining the historic Mt Morgans goldfield. A goldfield that is steeped in the history of Western Australia.

Mining first commenced in the Mt Morgans area in 1897.  However, it was the foresight of Alfred E. Morgans, a one time Premier of WA and after whom the district was named, that saw over 330,000 ounces of gold mined from 1897 to 1911.

In 1988 Dominion Mining followed by a number of companies mined a further 900,000 ounces until the falling gold price led to cessation of operations in 1998.

During the quarter your Company has made significant progress in commencing the third wave of production from Mt Morgans.  We are confident that this next wave will be equally as productive as the first two waves.

However, given the historic connections, we are reminded of the words of Sir Isaac Newton, who is attributed with saying:

If I have been able to see further than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.
